People handle emotions differently. Some people are like Mr. Spock from Star Trek fame. He relied on logic and downplayed his emotions.
Some people are like the Hulk. At times his anger transforms him into a raging, uncontrollable beast.
Which is right? Are we to deny our emotions and stuff them down? Or are we to let our emotions have free reign and allow them to dominate us?
Neither.
There is a better way. Jesus did not deny his emotions. He felt a wide range of emotions. The gospels record him experiencing many different emotions such as joy, sorrow, anger, peace, loneliness, and compassion. But never did these emotions dominate him. Instead, he directed or controlled his emotions. He channeled them in a way that glorified God and helped others.
Emotions “Mr. Spock, the Hulk, and Jesus”
Key Verses: “Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with one another” (Romans 12:15-6a).
In our series we will take these emotions one by one and see how we can live emotionally as Jesus did.
Our key passage for Sunday is Romans 12:15-16a, “Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with one another.”
