Exodus 20:17
You Shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbors’s wife, or his male servant, or his female servant, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor’s
Covetousness:

  • Leads to direct disobedience of God (Genesis 3:6)
  • Reveals the deception of this world (Matthew 13:22)
  • Is something to be guarded against (Luke 12:15)
  • Makes us envious of others ( Psalms 73:1-5)
  • Prompts sadness (Luke 18: 18-23)
  • Causes us to fight each other (James 4: 1-2a)
  • Is the opposite of contentment (Philippians 4:11-13)
Philippians 4:11-13
…for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content.  I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound, in any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need.  I can do all things through him who strengthens me.
Contentment:
  • Is great gain (1 Timothy 6:6)
  • Comes from God’s presence (Hebrews 13:5)
  • Brings freedom (1 Corinthian's 4:3-4
  • Is not circumstantial
  • Can be learned
  • Is attained when God is everything to you
